Supplement review

A supplement review asks a practical question: which products, if any, add value to your care? We look at the reason for each ingredient, the evidence, the actual formulation and how it fits with food, medicines and other supplements.

In detail

Why this matters in HLC care

A product can be useful for a specific need without being useful for everyone. Reviewing the whole list can uncover duplicate ingredients, unnecessary complexity, possible interactions and products whose purpose is unclear. The outcome may be to add, adjust, simplify or stop a product after discussion with the clinician.

Different products need different questions

For vitamins and minerals, review dietary intake, relevant results and the total amount across all products. For omega-3 products, look at the amounts of EPA and DHA rather than the total weight of “fish oil”. Protein, amino-acid and electrolyte products should be considered alongside meals, activity and the actual nutritional need.

For probiotics, the strain, combination, dose and studied condition matter; evidence for one product cannot automatically be transferred to another. Prebiotic fibres can also differ in tolerance. A microbiome score alone does not select the right product.

Products marketed around antioxidants, cellular energy, NAD precursors or telomeres require the same scrutiny. Astaxanthin, resveratrol, coenzyme Q10, NMN, NR and multi-ingredient blends are not interchangeable. A plausible mechanism or a change in a biomarker does not establish that a supplement prolongs life.

Read the formulation, not just the headline

Check the chemical form, amount per capsule versus per daily serving, added ingredients, storage and expiry. A powder, oil, capsule and injectable preparation have different requirements. A label or regulatory statement for an oral supplement does not establish suitability for injection.

Fit the plan to your health

Tell the clinician about medicines, pregnancy or breastfeeding, planned surgery, allergies and kidney or liver conditions. Include occasional products and sports supplements. Some combinations can affect treatment or laboratory results, so a complete list is more useful than reviewing each product in isolation.

Give each product a purpose and a review point

For an agreed product, record why you are taking it, the intended duration and how benefit or tolerability will be assessed. Revisit the plan when medicines, health or diet change. Supplements should support an appropriate care plan, not replace needed medical treatment or a varied diet.
