Laboratory tests

Gut microbiome and stool testing

A stool profile explores the microorganisms in a sample and, in selected panels, the substances they produce. It can add context to a digestive-health discussion, helping connect the laboratory report with symptoms, diet and the tests that have established clinical value.

Sample
A stool sample collected with the supplied kit; handling and transport depend on the ordered components.
Possible report components
Microbial composition and diversity; selected functional-group estimates; and, when ordered, directly measured stool metabolites.

In detail

Why this matters in HLC care

Digestive symptoms are shaped by many factors. The useful role of a profile is to support a defined question and a considered discussion of nutrition, medicines and symptoms. It should not delay established investigations for persistent pain, bleeding, unexplained weight loss or other concerning changes.

Three different layers of information

Composition describes the organisms detected and their relative abundance. Diversity summarises aspects of that distribution. A higher or lower abundance does not automatically mean that one organism is helping or harming you; the method and comparison population matter.

Functional-group estimates use microbial composition to infer possible activity. Direct metabolite measurements are a separate layer: a broader panel may measure selected bile acids and tryptophan-related or other metabolites in stool. A predicted capacity is not the same as a measured concentration.

Preparing and collecting

Record recent antibiotics, probiotics, supplements, digestive medicines and major dietary changes. Follow the kit’s collection, storage and dispatch instructions. Do not stop treatment or dramatically change your diet just to influence the report unless your clinician gives specific instructions.

Turning detail into a practical plan

The report can help structure a conversation about dietary variety, fibre tolerance and symptom patterns. Commercial microbiome profiles do not yet provide a universally validated definition of the ideal microbiome or a reliable prescription for a particular probiotic. Colour-coded “dysbiosis” scores need cautious interpretation.

If a change is agreed, define a practical goal and how to assess it, such as symptom improvement or a clinically relevant measurement. An improved proprietary score alone does not establish better health.
