Cancer screening assessment

A screening review helps you choose appropriate checks before symptoms appear. We consider age, personal and family history, previous screening and the evidence for each option, with a clear plan for what would happen after an abnormal result.

In detail

Why this matters in HLC care

Prevention works best when the test matches your risk and leads to an effective next step. Keeping recommended screening current may be more useful than adding an unfamiliar test while established checks are overdue. The review helps organise those priorities.

Understanding the options

Breast, cervical, colorectal, lung and prostate screening each have their own eligibility and decision process. Skin assessment and hereditary-risk evaluation address additional questions where relevant. No single blood test or whole-body scan replaces all of these approaches.

Some newer blood tests look for signals associated with several cancers. Their performance, eligible population and evidence must be reviewed for the exact assay. A positive signal requires diagnostic follow-up; a negative signal cannot rule out cancer.

What to discuss before testing

Bring dates and results of previous screening and details of cancer in close relatives, including age at diagnosis if known. Discuss false positives, false negatives, possible overdiagnosis, cost and access to follow-up. New symptoms need clinical investigation rather than waiting for a screening appointment.
